Here at Equinox Orloffs the breeding system in place is called the Spiral or Clan breeding method. This method is used to greatly cut down on inbreeding while quickly achieving our goals. Each variety we work with starts with a base of 3 pairs, or clans, maintained by the mother's line. Right now we are still working on building up our Orloff population, but we will still be offering a small number of chicks for sale to help promote this amazing breed.
Spangled Clans
Red Clan Foundation (2019): Jacob (Ron Rector line) x Clover (Julio Rivera line)
Blue Clan Foundation (2020): Pansy (Ron Rector line) x High Hopes line
Purple Clan Foundation (2020): High Hopes line A x High Hopes line B
Mahogany Clans
Green Clan Foundation (2019): Popcorn (Green Fire Farms line) x Wade (Ron Rector line)
No other Mog clans yet, planning to acquire more mahogany orloffs to work with from Julio Rivera and Kummer Poultry if possible.
Planned
Confirmed
Current
Popcorn x Wade Test Batch
Date of Birth: January 26th, 2019
Offspring
Updates
01/05/19: Set three eggs in the incubator, one is Popcorn x Wade, the other is Popcorn x Clover, and the other is a non-Orloff mutt. Testing Popcorn's fertility.
01/15/19: Candled the eggs today, the three are developing right on schedule. Popcorn is confirmed fertile, as are Wade and Clover.
01/26/19: All three eggs that were set hatched right on time. Wade's chick, deemed Miles, hatched first and has been banded alright (orange). Then Clover's chick hatched about an hour later, deemed Blossom. Several hours later the third egg (a mutt from our mixed flock) hatched, deemed Echo. All are very healthy and perky.
This pairing should produce some quality Mahogany chicks. Expecting an improved brow, very big birds, hopefully with good leg length and type. Should have a very rich color, and excellent temperaments. Legs should be vibrant yellow. Hoping they inherit Wade's beak. Will be heterozygous for spangled, so bred back to a spangled bird have a 50/50 chance of being spangled or mahogany, bred to mahogany would only produce mahoganies.
The Popcorn x Clover chick isn't really part of the plan, but I try to set at least three at a time so the chicks can develop healthy social skills. Should still produce a nice baby, and at least confirmed Clover's fertility. Probably will have excellent leg length and type, a great brow, but not a good beak.
